Portfolio - Word Splash

Global Issues Reflection – Kevin Kang

Throughout this trimester, my wheel subject was GLOBAL ISSUES. I have learned many things about conflicts, disparity, barriers to development and how to make the world better. This class was unusual because everything we learn keeps changing, sometimes it feels challenging because we are only 7th graders and the problems seem so huge for us, we realized that many of the issues we discussed actually had no answers, we tried to be environmentally friendly and use no paper and we learned about issues and also had a role in educating other people in the MS too. Other classes are not like this.

The SCHOOL WIDE LEARNING RESULTS all apply to this class, however I feel that LIVING ETHICALLY fits best. Some things that we did to live ethically were to:
  • Challenge the Friday Flash paper copies
  • Trying to reduce electricity
  • Looking at our MW carbon footprint and trying to replant trees
  • Organizing AIDS DAY activities, raised money and make people more aware
  • We donated food to Haiti through www.freerice.com
  • We played simulation games about sustainable farming and life in Haiti
  • We spoke in front of the school about AIDS and MALAYSIA WEEK
My portfolio reflection is below:

Ayiti - the Cost of the Life

1. What was it like playing the game?

When I played this game, I was really fraustrated because the problem didn't solve easily. I was really thinking that I should donate some money to them, because I just realized that their life is hard.

2. What was the game about and how would you describe it to a friend?

The game was about the life in Ayiti, you get to experience how hard it is to be successful there.

3. Which primary objective did you choose, and why?

I chose money because money can do anything in Haiti. You can go to hospital anytime you want if you just have enough money to pay it. Also, you can buy a house to make the family happy.

4. What types of decisions did you have to make about the family members while playing the game and trying to achieve your objective?

I had to risk their life because I ignored their health until 30% because they had to work for money.

5. What strategies did you use? For example, did you combine work and school, or did you send anyone to school? Which worked? Which did not?

First, I let them work about one seasons and I started to spend each of one to hospital for their health care while others were working. So, we kept working while one person is at hospital. Also, I bought lots of books so that they will be educated.

6. Why would parents choose to devote so much effort sending their children to school?

If you get more education - the better job you get. So, in this game, if you get educated really well, you get to get lots of salary while you use small amount of health.

7. How many of you were able to keep the children in school?

I usually sent one of them but then, I was lack of money so, I started to buy them a book so that they can learn themselves. I thought that was the best strategy.

8. What obstacles did you face in trying to keep them in school?

I was lack of money and also, when I kept them in school, sometimes they didn't learn anything - just spent tons of money without any benefits.

9. How do the situations and options in the game compare with those in your own community?

In our community, we have more chance of getting a better job. Also, the government provides at least few money and access the education for free. However, in this game, government doesn't let people to access the education for free.

10. Why might access to education be a challenge in another country?

If you live in poor country such as Haiti, the professional teachers don't want to live there so, they don't have professional teachers - but only local teachers.

11. What factors would make it easier for the children in the game to gain access to education? What conditions could be changed and how?

By having the professional educators, children can acces to education better. So, government should change the law so that everyone can access to education for free.

12. Find out more information about Haiti using your notes from class and the Haiti Country Profile Sheet. Write a short description (but factually based) paragraph explaining you think it feels, what you think it sounds like, what you think it looks like in Haiti. Give it a suitable title and add a sourced image.

Haiti - Lost, Devasted, but New Hope.

Recently, Haiti had an earthquake which influenced the world, people, and Haiti's government. They had lost everything - sweet home, money, and family. House were devasted by the earthquake and they lost their last hope. However, every citizen started to donate money towards U.N for Haiti and they are having the "New Hope" this year. This hope is supported by everyone in the world who took some efforts into Haiti and people who donated money for suffering people. U.N and other NGO (Non-Government Organization) are still supporting them to rebuild their important buildings. Eventhough, their last hope was gone, but new hope were created by us. Let's create some hope for Haiti.

Aid's Day - What

Questions...
What are your reactions?
What did our actions mean to you / other students at ISKL / the world around us?
What were your highlights from yesterday?
What will you remember about the day?
What do you think GI students should do next year on World AIDS Day?
What did you learn after taking part in an action project like this?

In AIDS Day, I brought red beverages for the 'Bake Sales' and wore red shits to represent the symbol of Aids. Also, I've wore a pink paper cloth underneath my red shirt to advertise that
there are certain events going on in lunch time. There were 'Bake Sale', 'Tag Day', 'Soccer Match' and 'Sponge Throw'. By doing this events, we have collected over 500 RM and money was donated to Malaysian Aids Foundation. This action tells me that I have supported one poor African for at least 1 year. I think other students at ISKL have meant same thing like me. Because we have put some efforts in, the world around us would be really thankful.

Out of 4 major events, I loved the Soccer Match best because by playing soccer, we donated money towards MAF. I also participated in soccer match but we lost. Because this is the first time to help, I think I will remember AIDS DAY - 2009. However, I feel like our Global Issues class should put more efforts. So next year in December 1st 2010, other Global Issues students need to organize the events more and donate more money towards MAF. After this major project, I learned that there are lots of people suffering from AIDS and we are really lucky to be born like this.

Before Learning about Global Issues...

What are global issues?
Why should I care?
Explain your choice of quotes & image.

"Everywhere I go, I see very much the same thing. I see the same compassion for people who live half a world away. I see the same concern about events beyond these borders. And, increasingly, I see the same conviction that we can and we must join together to stop the scourge of AIDS and poverty." From Bono Vox, U2 leader.

Issue, issue, issue. In 21st century, there are tons of small and gigantic issues happening around the world. Small issues weren't that important to all of citizen in the world. However, Global Issues were important to all of citizen in the world and still important. Every citizen, government, and celebrities such as Bono Vox from U2 donates money, helps people physically to solve the problem we are having right now. Then what is Global Issue? Why people care about it?

As you know Global Issues influence people critically - mostly Africans because of lack of money. This Global Issues such as "Global-Warming", "AIDS", "Water", "Electricity", "Poverty", "Inequality" and etc is mostly related with cultural problem and lack of money. For example, Aids - it effect most of African's life because they don't know how to prevent it or they don't have enough money to spend money on two small pills that can almost (not 100%) cure aids. That's why AIDS is one of the serious Global Issues that is influencing people's life. Now, you get a little idea, what is global issue and what does it influence us.

As I talked about how serious it is last paragraph, we should all participate and stand up for something - something like helping poors. If we don't, think what's going to happen. There are few possibilities that can occur. First, they might riot and fight against us. Secondly, the population would decrease really fast and the one of African's race would be gone. Thirdly and mostly importantly, if we don't stand up for their rights, innocent people will die, even child will die. Because of you, innocent people will starve, die painfully. Why don't you stand up?

The picture and the quote on the front, that really tells you about Global Issue. Let's talk about picture first. The picture - the Earth covered with fire, shows what's going to happen if we don't work out with Global issues. That's why I chose this picture. It has a strong impression and stronger meaning than picture with saying "Help for Global Issue". I chose the quote by Bono (My favorite singer and band U2) because he is my favorite singer. Joking. Bono Vox have donated tons of moneys to African - even had a concert named "Aids Concert" in U.K. Coming back to topic, I chose this quote because this quote tells me that he saw every country, and found out that global issue isn't only happening for African, but other country. Also, this encourage us to stand up for poverty and aids - our most serious global issues right now. So almost everyone is helping, your friends are supporting, how about you helping, supporting, standing up for Global Issues?

Peace, Peace and Peace

"Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding." by Albert Einstein. Right now, one of the most serious global issue is peace. Without peace, we would not exist, everyone wouldn't exist. Then why - why are we having war? War is the most disgusting, dirty situation going around the world right now. "In war, there are no unwounded soldiers" by José Narosky. Everyone will be sad, miserable, wounded and dying if the war keep continues. We must stand up. Protest for peace, stand against the war. If everyone of you stand of for peace, I am pretty sure that war will be gone forever. Find out more about peace - but not just peace, but other global problems such as "Poverty, AIDS".

If you collaborate and stand up, it will make a big, effective peace to the world.
